Guidelines for Submissions

Acceptance

The submissions to this journal have to adhere to the guidelines contained in the following sections. Those works that do not meet the established requirements can not be accepted.

The academic articles submitted will be evaluated by the “double blind pairs” system by the Scientific Committee of the journal or by other external reviewers, whose suggestions are sent to the authors so that they can make the pertinent modifications. Only original works that have not been previously published in other magazines are accepted.

The built works, book reviews and short essays proposed for publication are reviewed by the editorial team itself, which determines their suitability for the magazine and carries out all needed editions and revisions.

Extension and format

The length of the texts will depend on the section of the magazine to which they are addressed:

  • Research papers: up to 5000 words + abstract, key words (they must be different from the words included in the title), brief biography, list of figures, bibliography and notes and a minimum of 10 images.
  • Reflections: from 1500 to 2500 words + abstract, key words (they must be different from the words included in the title), brief biography, list of figures, bibliography and notes and a minimum of 6 images
  • Works: from 500 to 1200 words + abstract, key words (they must be different from the words included in the title), list of figures, brief biography, bibliography (if needed) and a minimum of 10 images
  • Book reviews: up to 300 words and one image (book cover).

Texts may be submitted in English or Spanish.

Among the images sent, the editorial committee selects those that best fit the objectives and needs of the publication.

The abstracts must include the objectives, methods, results and main conclusions of the work. Keywords must allow computerized search by subject, methodology, geographic and chronological location, and must not contain the terms included in the title, since both are always published together.

Research papers must be properly structured and include an introduction, an exposition of the research methodology and conclusions that include the main results of the study which has been carried out.

The bibliographic lists (in alphabetical order of authors) and the list with the captions of the figures must be included at the end of the text itself, not in separate files.

Submission of Research papers

Research papers must have a length of up to 5000 words, without counting the abstract, keywords, bibliography, list of figures and notes. The abstract of the article (maximum 150 words) must be sent, together with the title of the article, the 5 keywords (they must be different from the words included in the title) and, in a separate file, in order to ensure anonymity, a document with the name of the author (or authors), their affiliation, their email address (or addresses) and a brief biography of each of them (of up to 120 words each).

The biography must be written in a similar way than the following example:

Alejandro García Hermida

He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Architectural Composition of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and has been a Visiting Scholar at the School of Architecture of the University of Notre Dame. His professional practice has been focused on traditional architecture and building techniques and the restoration and study of diverse historic buildings and archaeological sites. He is the Executive Director of the INTBAU Initiatives in Spain and Portugal, member of the Board of Terrachidia NGO; and Vice Chair of INTBAU Spain. Some of these works have been awarded the INTBAU Excellence Award 2015, the Hispania Nostra Award 2019 and a Special Mention from the Europa Nostra Awards 2019.

Research papers must be sent in .doc or .docx format (not .pdf) and they must include, in the approximate chosen location, the figures (photographs, drawings or plans) that illustrate the text. Following the guidelines provided in the section on graphic documentation, these same figures must also be uploaded as separate files (in .jpeg or .jpg format).

In addition, a descriptive caption must always be included for each of the images, always indicating the author of the image and / or its source. A list of the figures that illustrate the article must be included at the end of the text, after the bibliography. This list must include the credits of each of the images.

They can be built or unbuilt works, though built works are prioritized. Special attention must be paid to the design and execution process of traditional building details.

The text must also address the context, the conditions, the process, the building crafts that have intervened, and the final result. In the case of restoration works the text must also include some information about the history, the preliminary studies and the initial state. The selected images must also attend to the aforementioned aspects, from the context to the construction details.

The biography should be written in a similar way than the following example:

Lluc Mir Anguera

He is a marger and stonemason specialized in the dry stone construction technique, a tradition deeply rooted in the Balearic Islands, Spain. With more than twenty years of experience, he runs his own company, dedicated to stone building and restoration of heritage elements. Since 2016 he is the president of the Gremi de Margers of Mallorca, an association of dry stone professionals who are dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of this building craft. Awarded in 2019 with the Richard H. Submission of Book Reviews

Book reviews must have a length of up to 300 words and a single image must be included in the submission, which must be the cover of the reviewed publication and which must be attached as "Other" during the second step of the submission process, preferably in .jpeg or .jpg format.

The title of the review must not be the very title of the book, but a specific one for it, and it must be followed by the name of the author of the review.

By the end of the text of the review, the title of the book, the name of its author, the publisher, the year and the number of pages must be included.

Graphic documentation

The texts must be accompanied by images, tables or graphics in order to facilitate the understanding of the content.

The images should be attached as "Other" during the second step of the submission process, preferably in .jpeg or .jpg format and each of them in separate electronic files.

In addition, a descriptive caption must always be included for each of the images, always indicating the author of the image and / or its source. A list of the figures that illustrate the article must be included at the end of the text, after the bibliography. This list must include the credits of each of the images.

All graphic documentation is considered a figure (Fig.), including line drawings, photographs, maps, plans or charts. The figures must be ordered and numbered indicating in the text the ideal place between paragraphs where the author would like them to be included. This suggested position will be respected as far as possible in the layout process, but the number and final position of the images will depend on the limitations imposed by the design of the magazine.

Special attention should be paid to the quality of the images. We will follow a strict selection process for both photographs and drawings. This aspect will be decisive for the final decision on the acceptance of the article, as the visual effect of the magazine will be particularly important.

Bibliographic references and style of the references

The bibliography must only include the references which are cited in the text. The bibliographic list must not include references to primary sources (archival material, periodical press, or unpublished reports), which must be developed only in a footnote.

The bibliographic list and, if necessary, the list of primary sources must be arranged alphabetically by the author's first surname (first author, if there are several) and the year of publication. If the author is not shown in the referenced work, the author must be replaced by the translator or editor (indicating the corresponding abbreviation in parentheses) or by the title of the work. When including several works by the same author / s, their full name must be repeated in each case, not being replaced by a hyphen. If there are several works by the same author / s and they are from the same year / s, a distinctive letter must be added after the year (a, b, c ...).

The style of the references in the bibliographic list will be as follows:

  • Books. Surname(s), Name. Year. Title of the book in italics. Place of publication: Name of the publisher.

Example: Krier, Leon. 2013. La arquitectura de la comunidad: La modernidad tradicional y la ecología del urbanismo. Barcelona: Reverté.

  • Articles in conference proceedings or book chapters. Surname(s), Name. Year. Title of the cited chapter. In Surname(s), Name (ed.), Title of the book in italics, page interval 00-00. Place of publication: Name of the publisher. * Chapter written by an author which is found within a book with chapters written by different authors. This type of book usually has a person responsible for the compilation of the chapters, the editor, who will be referred to as such.

Example: Krier, Leon, 2018. Del Desempleo al Autoempleo. In García Hermida, Alejandro (ed.), New Traditional Architecture MMXVIII, 35-45. Madrid: INTBAU Spain.

  • Articles in magazines. Surname(s), Name. Year. Title of the article. Publication name in italics, volume number (if existing), magazine number: page range of the article 00-00, doi (if existing).

Example: De la Hoz Martínez, Juan de Dios. 2012. Terremoto en Lorca: consecuencias y actuaciones sobre el patrimonio religioso. Patrimonio cultural de España, 6: 107-121.

  • Internet references. The references will follow the style of the corresponding document (website or online publication), adding at the end the permanent link (doi or handle, if it has one) or the URL address, and after that, the date of consultation with the format: (consulted on 00/00 / 0000).

Example: https://redmaestros.com/Maestros/can-pinyonaire-vidrieras/ (consulted on 02/07/2020)

Quotes in text. Each quotation in the text must correspond to a bibliographic or primary source reference (and vice versa) and must contain at least the surname of the author/s or, in their absence, the editor/s or translator/s or title of the work, and date of publication. The citations will be in brackets, including the surname or surnames of the author or authors (without the name), followed by the year of publication. After two points, if needed, the volume (vol.), and finally the page or pages quoted. When the quoted work has three or more authors, the abbreviated formula et al. after the first author should be used; nevertheless, this expression is not allowed in the final bibliography, where all authors must be included.

Example: (Ameriks 2000: 227)

Footnotes. Footnotes will be restricted to the essential ones. All bibliographic citations must be made in the text itself.
